“CONSISTENTLY ADVENTUROUS HIP-HOP THAT PUSHES THE OUTER LIMITS OF NUMEROUS STYLES.”
Creative Loafing Atl
Monkier is a live hip-hop band that blends the best of jazz, funk, and electronic psychedelia into their innovative sound. The group combines the energy of live hip-hop with the spontaneity of a jazz band. The horns swing, the rhymes flow, and the rhythm grooves.
Lead by rapper, songwriter, and keyboardist Zac Evans, Monkier was formed in 2013 out of the local Atlanta jazz scene. Gradually the band grew into an 8-piece, and they began to perform around Atlanta's burgeoning left-field/experimental jazz scene. In May 2016 Monkier is independently releasing their sophomore album and plans to support it with a national tour.
"The horns swing, the rhythm section is on point, the music swells in just the right times, and Evans has lyrical chops while keeping a good balance between his rapping and the rest of the music."
Anthony Dean-Harris, Nextbop.com
"ATL-based collective Monkier takes the groove oriented jazz inflected hip-hop of the early 90s and pushed it more explicitly into the jazz arena, layering moody, horn-centric grooves over fusion-focused key explorations and bubbling bass, all topped off where necessary with Zac Evans' astute rhymes."
Gabe Vodicka, Flagpole Magazine (Athens, GA)
The songs are tightly fragments deliciously layered to reward new auditory treats upon repeated listening. Moniker's debut acts as a superb living document of Atlanta's burgeoning left-field experimental jazz and hip-hop scene.
